Australian Government Delays Student Visa Evidence Level Changes

Canberra, Australia – The Australian Department of Home Affairs has announced a delay in implementing planned changes to student visa evidence levels. These changes were scheduled to take effect at the end of September 2024 but have been postponed to align with the passage of the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) legislation.

The department explained that the pause will allow education providers to adjust their recruitment processes in light of the new National Planning Level introduced by the ESOS legislation. If the legislation does not pass, the Minister for Home Affairs will determine the appropriate timeline for implementing the evidence level changes.

Evidence levels are used to assess the risk associated with student visa applicants from different countries and education providers. They determine the financial and English evidence requirements for student visa applicants.

The department emphasized that maintaining the integrity of the Student visa program is crucial for the reputation of Australia’s international education sector. All parties involved in the sector, including registered education providers and other government agencies, have a responsibility to ensure that only genuine students are enrolled in Australian education institutions.
