Procedure to apply for Canada study permit

However, applying for a student visa in Canada is not a piece of cake. Especially, when you are completely a novice about the process and you are afraid of what if your visa gets refused!!!

Therefore, I have broken the complicated and tiresome process into eleven easy steps that will assist you in how you can apply for a study permit in Canada easily.

Shortlist Canadian Program/University or College

First, you need to finalize the program depending upon your interest and your previous qualification. Thereafter, you can decide the college or university which is offering the same program via their official websites. All the prospective candidates must conduct a careful analysis of eligibility criteria and program requirements before applying. Take the course that excites you and lands you a number of employment opportunities after completion of your studies and eventually, it may become a ladder to your career graph.

Get required IELTS/PTE/TOEFL Score

English proficiency exam is necessary for every international student in order to gain successful entry in Canada. In absence of your IELTS/PTE/ TOEFL, your application will be rejected. The English exam enables you to have an excellent command over the English language which is the most vital for living in Canada or any other English-speaking country.

IELTS is an English proficiency test that is globally recognized and accredited by foreign countries. It is necessary for prospective applicants who are willing to study and work in any English speaking countries such as Canada, UK, USA and Australia etc.

PTE

The Pearson Test of English is a computer based test. If you are not good with a pen and paper and awful with your handwriting, you can opt out for this test. Your marks are calculated by the machine and you receive your results within a week. It entails all the four modules as IELTS. It is highly recommended if you are applying for an Australian student visa.

TOEFL

TOEFL is another English proficiency test that measures your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. It is available in two modes TOEFL IBT (Internet based test) and TOEFL PBT (Paper Based Test), whichever you wish to take, you can simply book the test  through official website of ETS TOEFL

Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English test is the cheapest and time saving test. It is completely an online test. For which, you need a computer or laptop and an internet connection. You can take this from anywhere around the world at any time. The examination fee is very low in comparison to IELTS, TOEFL and PTE. You just need to pay $49 USD ( INR 3,675) only. You will get your result within 48 hours.

Apply Offer letter or letter of Acceptance for Canada study permit

Once you shortlist the programs and Universities or College, you are ready to apply for an offer letter. Please ensure you always apply two or three colleges in advance as a backup. For applying your offer letter, you need to have certain documents as follows.

  1. 10th class mark-sheet (Scanned copy)
  2. 12th class mark-sheet (Scanned copy)
  3. Provisional Certificate (Scanned copy)
  4. Passport (Scanned copy)
  5. IELTS TRF (Scanned copy)
  6. Credit card credentials for paying the application fee to college or university (if applicable)

Documents require for apply post-graduate programs in Canada

  1. 10th class mark-sheet (Scanned copy)
  2. 12th class mark-sheet (Scanned copy)
  3. Provisional Certificate (Scanned copy)
  4. all semester mark-sheets (Scanned copy)
  5. Backlog Summary or No-backlog summary from your college or university
  6. Passport (Scanned copy)
  7. IELTS TRF (Scanned copy)
  8. work experience (If applicable) (Scanned copy)
  9. Salary Statement or salary Slip (If applicable) (Scanned copy)
  10. Make share you submit your correct email address and phone number
  11. Credit card credentials for paying application fee to college or university (if applicable)

Once you arrange required documents, you can go to the university/ college portal and apply from there directly. However, some universities and colleges charge a certain amount as an application fee. It is not applicable for every institution. If you are paying the application fee, you have to arrange the credit card credentials through which you can pay your application fee, which is a non-refundable amount.

Offer letter processing time varies from college to college. Each college or university has a different procedure for releasing the offer letter. Some colleges take a week or a few take more than a week like Sheridon and Humber college.

Make fee payment or tuition fee

Once you receive the offer letter, read it carefully. Check each and every detail thoroughly. Once you get satisfied with the information that your offer letter contains. You can make payment on the college/university portal or through the given link on your letter of acceptance. You may receive a fee payment receipt from applied college within a day or two. It’s an essential prerequisite at the time of visa procedure.

Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)

The Canada GIC process is a mandatory requirement for international students who are willing to study in Canada under the SDS (Student Direct Stream)programs recommended by the Canadian government.  The Canadian government does not ask for a GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant) like Australia if you fall under the SDS category.

The GIC amount of $10,000 CAD can be deposited only in three banks as approved by the Canadian Government.

  • SBI, Canada
  • ICICI Bank, Canada

First, you need to create an account online with any of the above-mentioned banks which are located in Canada. On successful registration of your GIC account, the respective bank will send you investment account number along with wire transfer details on your registered email address.

Once you receive GIC account number and wire transfer details, you may proceed further. You can make payment of $10,000 CAD from your home country online and have patience until you get the receipt of GIC submission from the concerned bank.

The complete GIC process takes 10 to 12 days turnaround time. Therefore, you should initiate your GIC process a month before your student visa lodgment.

Medical Test

Medical test is an essential requirement to be carried out by international students. It is performed to detect any disease and health problem if a prospective student is confronting. Your own doctor can’t do the medical test. It has to be done by a doctor approved by the Canadian government.

You are issued a medical receipt from the panelled hospital, which will be required at the time of visa lodgment. Moreover, the medical test report will automatically be forwarded to the visa office.

Collection of Biometrics

Collection of biometrics are biological measurements that can be utilized to identify individuals. For example, facial recognition, fingerprint mapping and retina scanner. You need to make an appointment through VFS’s website. You can pay the biometrics fee ($85 CAD) and visa fee ($150 CAD) together. Thereafter, you will receive the biometrics instruction letter from IRCC via mail. Thereafter, you need to visit VFS office to complete your biometrics enrollment.

Letter of intent or SOP (Statement of purpose)

Letter of intent is an official document that states your intentions why you wish to migrate to Canada on the basis of study permit. It should be concise and articulated, yet as convincing as possible. It gives the immigration officer an insight into what you wish to gain by studying in Canada.

If the officer finds a single reason that you don’t wish to return to your home country after completion of your studies, it may cause visa refusal. It is a mirror that advocates your motives and plans during your study permit in Canada. Kindly keep your LOI or SOP as genuine as possible.
